#BREAKING: Fire and Emergency (Fenz) is evacuating properties near Loburn in North Canterbury due to large vegetation fires in the area

In a display of unwavering determination, Fire and Emergency (Fenz) crews have successfully contained a large vegetation fire near Amberley, only to redeploy resources to tackle another blaze at Loburn near Rangiora. The challenges posed by these relentless fires underscore the resilience and dedication of the emergency services personnel who have been battling the flames.

Fenz Assistant Commander Des Irving provided insights into the extensive efforts deployed to contain the fire near Amberley. Approximately 18 fire crews and tankers, supported by three helicopters, collaborated to confine the fire to an area approximately 1 kilometer long by 600 meters wide. Despite the progress made, the unpredictable nature of the fires, exacerbated by increasing winds, necessitates an overnight vigil at the scene to ensure a robust response to any potential flare-ups.

Irving acknowledged the challenges faced by the crews, emphasizing their commendable hard work in the face of adversity. The containment efforts have seen positive results, with Fenz announcing the gradual return of evacuees from Racecourse Rd in a 4.45 pm update. However, the situation remains dynamic, urging residents to stay vigilant and be prepared for evacuation if circumstances dictate.

Tragically, reports suggest that at least one house has fallen victim to the relentless blaze near Amberley, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of wildfires on communities and property.

The emergency response commenced around 1:20 pm when multiple fire crews, along with three helicopters, rushed to combat the blaze cutting through tree stumps, grass, and various combustible materials. The formidable nature of the fire, fueled by the diverse vegetation and challenging terrain, has required a multifaceted approach to containment.

The Hurunui District Council, in an effort to assist evacuees from Racecourse Rd, has advised them to head to the Hurunui Library. This coordination reflects the collaborative approach between emergency services and local authorities to provide support and shelter to those affected by the fires.

Simultaneously, Fenz crews are redirecting resources to address fires at Loburn, near Rangiora, amplifying the strain on emergency services. The situation involves three helicopters combating four vegetation fires on Loburn Whiterock Rd, requiring a concerted effort to prevent further escalation.

As police undertake evacuations and eight fire trucks, along with three tankers, battle the fires at Loburn, residents are urged to prioritize following the instructions of emergency services to ensure their safety.

The ongoing firefight in Canterbury underscores the unpredictable and dynamic nature of wildfires, emphasizing the critical need for preparedness, collaboration, and community resilience in the face of natural disasters. The dedication of emergency services personnel remains at the forefront, tirelessly combating the blazes to safeguard lives, homes, and the vibrant landscapes of Canterbury.
