Fire forces dozens of seniors out of their homes overnight in the bitter cold

In a compassionate response to a fire at a senior living apartment building, firefighters in Cudahy stepped beyond their traditional roles, not only battling the blaze but also providing shelter and warmth to those affected.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. near Packard and Barnard avenues, drawing several fire trucks to the scene. Initial reports from fire investigators indicated that the fire originated in the walls on the third floor, subsequently extending to the building's attic.

Amidst the emergency response, medics attended to one man who was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The extent of the evacuation and displacement of residents from the approximately 60-unit building remains unclear.

The frigid temperatures, hovering around zero degrees, added an extra layer of complexity to the situation. Cudahy Fire Chief Jeff Bloor emphasized the challenge of finding suitable shelter for residents, stating, "The temperatures outside are critical."

In a heartening display of community support, firefighters were observed assisting several people inside the Cudahy Family Library, providing refuge from the cold. The library, transformed into a makeshift shelter, offered warmth and solace to those impacted by the incident.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Milwaukee County Transit buses were deployed to aid in transporting residents, ensuring their safety and well-being. Additionally, the American Red Cross promptly responded, further extending assistance to those affected by the fire.

As the investigation continues and residents grapple with the aftermath, the resilience of the community, coupled with the dedication of the firefighters and emergency response teams, shines through as a beacon of hope amidst challenging circumstances. The collaborative efforts to address not only the immediate crisis but also the well-being of the affected individuals exemplify the compassionate spirit of Cudahy's emergency responders.

The student was interviewed by officers who found the statements made not to be an actual threat to the school or any other students. As soon as it was determined that there was no threat, the school issued a notice that it was no longer on lockdown status. “We want to thank the school officia...
