At least 100 dead and 700 injured in chaotic incident where IDF opened fire as people waited for food in Gaza

A deadly incident at a food distribution site in Gaza, in which dozens of Palestinians were killed, has added more urgency to ceasefire talks – but could also complicate them, President Joe Biden told reporters.

Update: Hamas warns that the incident near Gaza City could lead to the failure of truce talks.

"The negotiations conducted by the movement's leadership are not an open process at the expense of the blood of our people," it said, referring to Thursday's deaths and saying Israel would be responsible for any failure of the talks.

At least 104 people were killed and 760 injured in a chaotic incident where Israel Defense Forces' troops opened fire as hungry Palestinian civilians were gathering around food aid trucks, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.

Civilians had swarmed around newly arrived aid trucks in the hope to get food, when Israeli tanks and drones started shooting at the people in Haroun Al Rasheed Street in western Gaza City, in the Sheikh Ajleen area.

An Israeli official told CNN IDF troops did use live fire on people surrounding aid truck as "the crowd approached the forces in a manner that posed a threat to the troops, who responded to the threat with live fire. The incident is under review."

The aid trucks tried to escape the area, accidentally ramming others and causing further deaths and injuries.

The office of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, said he “condemned the ugly massacre conducted by the Israeli occupation army this morning against the people who waited for the aid trucks at the Nabulsi turnabout ”.

Oxfam spokesperson: “We are shocked by reports of the Israeli army killing people in Gaza while they were waiting for food aid. Israel deliberately targets civilians after starving them in flagrant violation of international humanitarian laws. The threat of genocide in Gaza has become a reality.”
