The PM of Hungary says the Hungarian parliament will approve Sweden's NATO bid.
After a long blockade by Hungary, Sweden is finally set to clear the last major hurdle on the way to its desired NATO membership today:
Parliament in Budapest is voting on the Scandinavian country’s application, which was submitted almost two years ago.
Hungary is the last NATO member that has not yet ratified Sweden’s accession.
On February 26, 1999, President Aleksander Kwaśniewski signed the act of accession of Poland to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
It takes place during a joint ceremony with the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, via satellite link and a large screen.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban asks parliament to ratify Sweden’s accession to the NATO military alliance.
Joining NATO requires unanimity from all its members, and so today's Hungarian vote will remove the last hurdle to Sweden's accession.
