Update: BREAKING: Joel Osteen (@JoelOsteen) Lakewood Church Shooter Identified as Transgender Individual, Known as "Jeffrey," Legal Name Genesse Moreno.


In a statement yesterday, Osteen wrote, "Our community is devastated by today’s events and grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement.

"May the healing hands of God touch the lives of everyone involved and provide comfort during this difficult time.    In the face of such darkness, we must hold onto our faith and remember evil will not prevail. God will guide us through the darkest of times.

"Together, we will rise above this tragedy and stand firm in our commitment to love and support one another.    In times like these, our faith is tested, but it is also strengthened.

"We don’t always understand why things like this happen, but we know that God is in control.    Please join me in continued prayer for healing and peace."


UPDATE: A woman in her 30s was shot dead after opening fire inside Lakewood Church in Houston on Sunday afternoon.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said a 35-year-old woman accompanied by a 5-year-old child and armed with a long rifle entered the west side of the church building around 1:53 p.m. Sunday. The 5-year-old child and a 57-year-old man were shot during the shooting, he said.

Police report that although the woman who opened fire at Houston's Lakewood Church claimed to have a bomb, none was discovered.

spokesperson: "She had a long gun and it could've been a lot worse."

Two people were shot, one of whom was a little child in critical condition. Police officers not on duty kill a suspect.

Update:

Two suspects. One female suspect is down but she has something strapped to her chest, which is suspected to be a bomb So they’re being very careful there. 

Some unofficial reports said a 5 year-old boy was killed in the incident. 

Update from The Houston Fire Department:
HPD is responding to reports of a shooting at 3700 Southwest Freeway. This is an on-going, active scene. Please avoid the area. Additional information will be provided as it is available.

Receiving initial reports of possible shots fired at/or around Lakewood Church, 3700 blk of Southwest Freeway. 

We have Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies that work an extra-job there. Info still preliminary.

Update: Information remains preliminary, as things remain dynamic. It is believed that a possible shooter is down, shot by one of our deputy’s on-scene. I’m enroute to the scene.

Multiple deputies are on scene. 

Unknown how many victims.

Initial reports said it is Happened on the second floor, a 5 yr old was hit.
