The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said a teen is in custody after a gun was found in his possession at school on Thursday morning.
According to the sheriff’s office, around 9 a.m., a school resource officer at Tanglewood Middle School was made aware that an anonymous tip came through the See Something, Say Something tip line providing information that a student was in possession of a gun.
Law enforcement and school staff made contact with the student and a stolen and unloaded gun was found in his backpack.
Deputies said they have not received any information that any threats were made.
The motive for why the student was in possession of a gun is not immediately clear.
The sheriff’s office said the 15-year-old student is facing charges for possessing a firearm on school grounds and will be taken to the juvenile detention facility in Columbia.
Greenville County Schools said the student will be recommended for expulsion in accordance with the district’s behavior code.
Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis said everyone is safe and no one was hurt during the incident.
As an additional precaution, all students are going through the EVOLV weapons detection system.
