Officials with Wright County said an officer shot and killed a person following a traffic stop on Saturday morning.
A Wright County deputy pulled a driver over on Ivory Avenue Northeast in St. Michael just after 4:45 a.m.
In a press release, officials said the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle got out with a weapon, confronted the officer, and refused to obey his commands.
The deputy shot the suspect during the confrontation, officials said. Deputies and first responders tried to save the suspect's life, officials said, but they were unsuccessful.
The person died at the scene.
Officials said the deputy involved in the shooting was placed on leave, as per standard policy.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating.
"We woke up to the sound of gunshots," said Jennifer Carbert who lives nearby. "We got up and started seeing military vehicle sheriffs first responders come in just a lot of activity early in the morning."
"It's usually real quiet down here," said Matt Zachman, another neighbor. "This doesn't usually happen."
