Two suspected smugglers are facing felony charges in connection with the death of a woman they allegedly abandoned in the desert before she was struck and killed by a train in El Paso, Texas

The tragic death of a woman abandoned in the desert near the La Union, New Mexico railroad crossing has brought to light the grim reality of human smuggling operations along the U.S.-Mexico border. Two suspected smugglers, Marco Olvera Aguilar and Jose Soto Perez, now face felony charges in connection with the incident, shedding light on the dangers faced by unauthorized migrants and the criminal networks that exploit their desperation.

The incident, which unfolded near a known pass-through area for unauthorized migrants evading capture by the U.S. Border Patrol, underscores the perilous journey undertaken by those seeking to enter the United States illegally. Documents filed in federal court reveal a harrowing sequence of events, culminating in the tragic death of a woman who was abandoned by her smugglers and subsequently struck by a train.

According to court records, a train conductor alerted New Mexico State Police to the fatality, setting off a chain of events that led to the apprehension of 11 unauthorized migrants believed to have been traveling with the woman. Four of these migrants implicated Soto and Olvera as the individuals responsible for guiding them through the desert—an activity euphemistically referred to as "foot guiding."

During separate interviews with Homeland Security Investigations agents, Soto allegedly confessed to leading a group of unauthorized migrants, including the woman, into the desert towards La Union. He admitted that the woman was among a small group that was left behind near the railroad tracks, while Olvera maintained communication with the smuggling organization based in Mexico.

Similarly, Olvera acknowledged his role as a "foot guide" for the smuggling organization and confessed to using "light towers" to help navigate the group through the desert. Tragically, he admitted that some migrants, including the woman who later died, were left behind when they could not keep up with the pace of the journey.

The criminal complaint filed against Soto and Olvera accuses them of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens resulting in death—a felony punishable by up to life in prison. This starkly highlights the grave consequences of their actions and the ruthless exploitation of vulnerable individuals seeking a better life.

The case underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to combat human smuggling and protect the lives of migrants embarking on perilous journeys in search of safety and opportunity. While law enforcement agencies continue their efforts to dismantle smuggling networks and hold perpetrators accountable, addressing the root causes of migration and providing viable pathways for legal immigration remain essential components of a humane and effective approach.

As the legal proceedings unfold, it is incumbent upon society to reflect on the human toll of illicit smuggling operations and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the dignity and rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. Only through concerted action and collective compassion can we strive towards a future where tragedies like this one become a thing of the past.

The student was interviewed by officers who found the statements made not to be an actual threat to the school or any other students. As soon as it was determined that there was no threat, the school issued a notice that it was no longer on lockdown status. “We want to thank the school officia...
