Cherryville man killed while riding a bike Wednesday night

A Cherryville man was hit by a car while cycling Wednesday night.

The incident happened in Lincoln County around 9 p.m.

Timothy Mark Eaker was riding a bike on N.C. 182 near Sorrells Baxter Road.

A 2016 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on N.C. 182 and struck Eaker who also was riding eastbound in the road.

Eaker, 59, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep, who is from Lawndale, was not injured.

Eaker was not wearing any reflective clothing, the road was not lighted, and no lights were on the bicycle, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors, and no charges are expected to be filed in this case, according to a press release from Highway Patrol.

The road was closed for several hours during the investigation.

Diamond View Briefly Locked Down While Police Investigate Threat

There were some scary moments Wednesday morning for Diamond View School students, staff and parents, after the Susanville Police Department received a report of a student who may have brought a firearm to school’s campus, which was immediately placed on a ‘lockdown status.’ “Officers arrived and met with the school principal, who identified the student,” explains Interim Chief of Police Michael Bengoa-Bollinger. “It was learned no gun was ever observed, and it was a ‘statement’ that had been overheard by the reporting students while on the bus to school this morning.” School officials and officers contacted the student away from the other children and found no firearm in the student’s possession.
