Developing: ACTIVE SHOOTER ALERT - Southern Utah University in Cedar City is currently in lockdown after an active shooter alert was issued



Southern Utah University has just sent an alert to students saying there's been an unconfirmed report of an active shooter.

We're in touch with the university and will be updating this article as we get the info.

To our campus community,


A suspicious phone call with a threat of an active shooter was received this morning around 9:20 am, sending our campus into lockdown procedures. After nearly four hours of regular alerts and law enforcement searching and clearing each building, we have cleared campus. All classes and activities are canceled for today. Campus is closed for the rest of the day and evening. Regularly scheduled classes and activities will resume tomorrow, Friday, April 12. Please go home and connect with your friends, family and community. Take time for self-care.


Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the suspicious phone call. We want to reassure you that there is no longer an active threat to the SUU campus. The official press release can be found online here: suu.edu/news/2024/04/active-shooter-threat.html


Support services are available for the campus community at suu.edu/mentalhealth and suu.edu/hr/benefits/eap.html.  Students and employees may call SUU’s Counseling and Psychological Services at 435-865-8621 for virtual assistance today.


We are grateful to SUU PD and local law enforcement agencies for their swift response. Officers took immediate action, followed protocols and prioritized campus safety. The SUU community is encouraged to report any information or questions to SUU Police.


I also want to thank you, our students, faculty, staff and community, who heeded the lockdown alert on our campus while officers responded and subsequently went from building to building. Tensions and emotions have undoubtedly been high, so please be reassured that your safety and well-being remain our top priority. We are here for you, and together, we will continue to promote a safe and secure campus environment for all.

9:51 am: SUU ALERT: EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION - We received a suspicious phone call regarding the possibility of an active shooter on the SUU Campus in Cedar City, Utah. Please be aware of a suspect fitting the description of a white male with black hat, black shades, green t-shirt, long hair, blue jeans, 20-25 years old. All SUU Facilities are to be on lockdown. If you are on campus follow lockdown procedures, go into the nearest room and lock door. If you are not on campus stay away. Police are on the scene and investigating.


9:31 am: SUU ALERT: EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION - We have a suspicious phone call regarding the possibility of an active shooter on the SUU Campus in Cedar City, Utah. All SUU Facilities are to be on lockdown. Police are on the scene and investigating. A suspect is NOT in custody. If you are campus follow lockdown procedures, go into the nearest room and lock door, if you are not on campus stay away. Contact Campus Public Safety. If you see anything suspicious or have information on the case. Wait for the all clear from College officials or local authorities. You will be contacted with additional information and updates.


9:15 am: SUU ALERT: There has been an unconfirmed report of an active shooter on the SUU campus in Cedar City. No further details are available at this time. Please be alert and notify authorities of any suspicious activity. Local law enforcement is en route. Avoid coming to campus until further notice.

Diamond View Briefly Locked Down While Police Investigate Threat

There were some scary moments Wednesday morning for Diamond View School students, staff and parents, after the Susanville Police Department received a report of a student who may have brought a firearm to school’s campus, which was immediately placed on a ‘lockdown status.’ “Officers arrived and met with the school principal, who identified the student,” explains Interim Chief of Police Michael Bengoa-Bollinger. “It was learned no gun was ever observed, and it was a ‘statement’ that had been overheard by the reporting students while on the bus to school this morning.” School officials and officers contacted the student away from the other children and found no firearm in the student’s possession.
