Update: The New Orleans Police Department says a Tulane University employee shot themselves inside a building on the downtown campus Friday morning.
The incident caused one floor of the building to be shut down
Tulane University Police officers were the first to arrive at the scene after a report of a suspicious person on the 9th floor of the Hutchinson Building.
When officers found the person, they had shot themselves.
The employee was identified as an animal care technician. Tulane PD said the person was taken to the University Medical Center for care.
According to the university, the Hutchinson Building reopened at 9 a.m.
Tulane University sent out the following statement:
At approximately 7:50 a.m. today, April 19, 2024, an Animal Care Technician employed by Tulane University shot himself inside the Hutchinson Memorial Building (School of Medicine) 1430 Tulane Ave., on Tulane's downtown campus. The employee is being treated at University Medical Center. We are still gathering information on this incident. There is no ongoing threat at this time. Hutchinson Building reopened at 9 a.m. Resources are available to any Tulane community member affected by this deeply troubling incident.
Tulane University Louisiana has announced police activity in the Campus.
They also asked people to stay away until all clear is given.
No additional information was given about the incident.

No active threat at this time however police activity remains, please continue to avoid the School of Medicine until all clear is sent.
There is no active threat at this time, but given police activity, please avoid the Hutchinson Building downtown at this time. We will have updates soon."
Witnesses on scene say an incident involving a worker happened before 8 a.m. on the 9th floor of the building.
The building is set to reopen to students and faculty at 9 a.m.; however, the 9th floor will remain closed.
