Domestic violence incident escalates to officer-involved shooting, suspect dead in San Antonio

In a harrowing turn of events, a domestic violence call on the far Northwest side of San Antonio escalated into a tragic officer-involved shooting, leaving a community grappling with the profound consequences of violence within the home.

The sequence of events unfolded with alarming speed on the evening of Saturday, April 20th, as officers from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) responded to a call on the 8600 block of Cheviot Heights for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Upon arrival, they were met with a scene of devastation: a 51-year-old woman, identified as the suspect's roommate, lay critically injured after being struck by a vehicle in what witnesses described as a deliberate attack. The gravity of the situation was compounded by the assailant's swift escape in a white BMW SUV, leaving behind a trail of shock and disbelief.

As SAPD detectives initiated an investigation and secured a felony warrant for the suspect—a 42-year-old man—tensions remained high within the community, apprehensive of the perpetrator's potential return. Tragically, those fears materialized in the early hours of Sunday, April 21st, when neighbors reported the suspect's ominous presence back at the residence.

Officers, once again called upon to restore order and ensure the safety of the community, swiftly moved to confront the suspect. However, what began as a routine intervention quickly descended into chaos and violence. In a desperate bid to evade capture, the suspect callously rammed his vehicle into both officers, precipitating a life-threatening confrontation.

Faced with imminent danger and the specter of further harm, one officer made the fateful decision to discharge their weapon, tragically resulting in the suspect's untimely demise at the scene. Amidst the chaos, the toll of violence reverberated beyond the perpetrator, with one officer requiring transportation to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the encounter, while another received medical attention on-site for minor injuries.

The repercussions of this tragic incident extend far beyond the confines of Cheviot Heights, underscoring the urgent need for proactive measures to address the scourge of domestic violence within our communities. Beyond the headlines and police reports lies the stark reality of lives shattered and families torn apart by the insidious grip of abuse.

As we grapple with the aftermath of this sobering event, it is incumbent upon us as a society to redouble our efforts to support survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and foster a culture of empathy, respect, and non-violence. This tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of early intervention, robust support services, and collaborative efforts to break the cycle of domestic violence and ensure that no individual—whether victim or perpetrator—falls through the cracks of our societal safety net.

In honoring the memory of the victim and acknowledging the bravery of the officers involved, let us recommit ourselves to the pursuit of a future where every individual can live free from the fear of violence and abuse—a future where tragedies such as this one are but a distant memory, replaced by a legacy of healing, resilience, and hope.

There were some scary moments Wednesday morning for Diamond View School students, staff and parents, after the Susanville Police Department received a report of a student who may have brought a firearm to school’s campus, which was immediately placed on a ‘lockdown status.’ “Officers arrived and met with the school principal, who identified the student,” explains Interim Chief of Police Michael Bengoa-Bollinger. “It was learned no gun was ever observed, and it was a ‘statement’ that had been overheard by the reporting students while on the bus to school this morning.” School officials and officers contacted the student away from the other children and found no firearm in the student’s possession. The student was interviewed by officers who found the statements made not to be an actual threat to the school or any other students. As soon as it was determined that there was no threat, the school issued a notice that it was no longer on lockdown status. “We want to thank the school officia...
