In 2023, global military expenditure reached a staggering $2443 billion, up 6.8% from the previous year—the sharpest increase since 2009.
This growth marks the ninth consecutive year of rising military budgets across all regions, with significant hikes in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East.
Nan Tian, SIPRI:
“The unprecedented rise in military spending is a direct response to the global deterioration in peace and security."
Russia's military spending surged by 24%, while Ukraine's escalated by 51%, influenced heavily by recent conflicts.
China continues its 29-year streak of increased military budgets, exerting pressure on neighboring countries to boost their own defenses.
