An hours-long standoff has come to a peaceful end with a suspect in custody, Honolulu police said Friday morning.
HPD released the update on their social media platforms, saying that there were no injuries to the suspect or responding officers.
However, they said an HPD K-9 was injured and received medical treatment.
The state Department of Education said Waianae Intermediate will be closed Friday as a precautionary measure because of the campus’ close proximity to the standoff.
No other public schools in the area are impacted at this time, officials said.
The DOE released the following statement:
Due to the ongoing active police investigation and heavy law enforcement presence near the school, Waianae Intermediate will be closed today as a precautionary measure for the safety of students and staff. The school has informed families of the closure, which includes after-school programs and activities. No other HIDOE schools in the area are impacted at this time. Waianae Intermediate implemented a soft lockdown Thursday afternoon around 3:20 p.m. when an incident occurred in the neighboring community. That situation is ongoing. The school is monitoring the situation and is in contact with the Honolulu Police Department.
The barricade started around 2:30 p.m. Thursday when sheriffs deputies tried to serve an eviction notice.
