Just In: Officer stabbed, suspect dead in Lumberton

In the quiet of a Monday night, under the shadow of a bridge on Highway 41 at Highway 74 in Lumberton, a routine patrol turned into a harrowing ordeal for a Fairmont Police Department officer. Chief Jon Edwards of the Fairmont Police Department revealed the chilling details of a violent encounter that unfolded under the cover of darkness, leaving the officer injured and a suspect dead.

According to Chief Edwards, the officer found himself under attack by a suspect wielding a knife, a sudden and terrifying assault that left the dedicated law enforcement official with multiple stab wounds. Faced with imminent danger and in a desperate bid to defend himself, the officer was compelled to resort to lethal force, firing his service weapon to subdue the assailant.

Tragically, the confrontation ended with the loss of the suspect's life, succumbing to the injuries inflicted during the altercation. The officer, too, was left grappling with the physical and emotional toll of the ordeal, promptly transported to a local hospital by fellow officers for urgent medical care.

As the investigation into the incident unfolds, crucial details remain shrouded in uncertainty. The identity of the deceased suspect is being withheld pending notification of family, a somber reminder of the human toll exacted by such tragic events. Similarly, the name of the valiant officer involved in the altercation has been withheld to facilitate the completion of the investigative process, ensuring a thorough and impartial examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In the wake of this unsettling turn of events, Chief Edwards implores the community to extend their thoughts and prayers to both the officers of the Fairmont Police Department and the grieving family of the deceased suspect. It is a solemn plea for unity and compassion in the face of adversity, underscoring the shared humanity that binds us together even in moments of profound loss and tragedy.

As the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assumes control of the investigation, adhering to established protocols and procedures, the broader community stands as a steadfast pillar of support for those affected by this distressing incident. In a time of uncertainty and upheaval, it is the resilience and solidarity of the community that offers hope for healing and eventual closure.

In the days ahead, as questions linger and wounds begin to heal, may the collective resolve of the Fairmont community serve as a beacon of strength and resilience, guiding all those impacted by this tragedy toward a future defined by peace, justice, and unity.
