At 8:33 p.m., a heavily armed police presence arrived on campus to respond to an active shooter threat that has now been deemed a hoax by University of Montana police.
The University of Montana Police Department Chief Brad Giffin said a person called 911 threatening to commit a shooting in Aber Hall. Giffin said "gunfire could be heard in the background" in the call.
Giffin told the Kaimin that Missoula Police, UMPD and Montana Highway Patrol officers responded within five minutes of the call. He said there has been no evidence that the threat was legitimate and he is "confident" it was a hoax.
He said he believes it was an illegal swatting prank, where an individual makes a false report of a serious crime. Giffin said the 911 call could not be traced back to identify the individual who placed it.
Kaimin reporters saw multiple police officers cocking guns by the tennis courts, and videos shared on the UM 2027 Snapchat story showed officers securing areas around Aber Hall.
UMPD lifted the campus lockdown in response to the threat at 10:25 p.m.. UMPD also received a call from residents in Pantzer Hall, who thought they heard gunshots, but Giffin said there were no shots fired on campus and officers assured those students they were safe.
UMPD sent out a campus-wide email about the threat, and alerted attendants at a Gabriel Iglesias comedy show in the Adams Center when it ended at around 10:20 p.m. As of 10:30 p.m., the audience members at the Adams Center are all clear and leaving.
