Third man charged over violent riot following alleged Wakeley stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel

The peaceful serenity of a Monday night service at the Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, Sydney, was shattered by an alleged act of violence that rippled through the community, culminating in a riot that left dozens injured and sent shockwaves throughout the region.

The incident, which saw the alleged stabbing of Assyrian bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel during a live-streamed service, quickly escalated into a confrontation between law enforcement and a large gathering outside the church. As police attempted to apprehend the 16-year-old suspect, tensions reached a boiling point, resulting in a violent clash that left more than 50 officers injured.

In the wake of the chaos, authorities swiftly moved to address the unrest, launching Strike Force Dribs to investigate the events surrounding the riot. Their efforts have led to the arrest of a third individual in connection with the violence—a 28-year-old man charged with threatening violence to cause fear.

The arrest follows the apprehension of electrician Sam Haddad, 45, who appeared in court facing charges of riot and affray. While Haddad denied direct involvement in the violence, prosecutors alleged that he had incited further aggression with his threatening remarks directed towards the alleged attacker.

During the court proceedings, chilling details emerged of the volatile atmosphere that gripped Wakeley that fateful night. As police struggled to maintain order, Haddad's alleged threats reverberated through the chaos, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the palpable tension that permeated the scene.

The repercussions of the Wakeley riot extend far beyond the physical injuries sustained by those involved. The incident has exposed deep-seated divisions within the community and sparked discussions about religious tolerance and societal harmony.

In times of crisis, it is imperative to seek understanding and unity, rather than succumbing to the impulses of fear and aggression. As the legal process unfolds and investigations continue, it is our collective responsibility to confront the root causes of such unrest and strive towards healing and reconciliation.

The events in Wakeley serve as a sobering reminder of the fragility of peace and the importance of fostering empathy and compassion in our communities. Only through dialogue, respect, and a commitment to justice can we hope to prevent such tragedies from recurring and build a brighter, more harmonious future for all.

The student was interviewed by officers who found the statements made not to be an actual threat to the school or any other students. As soon as it was determined that there was no threat, the school issued a notice that it was no longer on lockdown status. “We want to thank the school officia...
