Two men taken to hospital following slurry incident in Co Antrim cow shed

A routine day on a farm in Co Antrim took a dangerous turn as two men were rushed to the hospital following an incident involving slurry gases. The incident, which occurred in the Old Glenarm Road area of Larne, serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with agricultural work and the critical importance of safety measures in mitigating potential hazards.

Emergency services, including police and fire crews, swiftly responded to reports of slurry gases at a cow shed on Sunday, April 21st, at approximately 5:20 pm. The quick and coordinated response underscores the urgency with which such incidents must be addressed, particularly given the potentially life-threatening nature of exposure to slurry gases.

The two men affected by the incident—one in his 30s and the other in his 60s—were promptly transported to the hospital for treatment, highlighting the serious health implications of exposure to hazardous gases present in slurry. The closure of the Old Glenarm Road from Croft Road to Branch Road allowed emergency responders to effectively manage the situation and ensure the safety of both the affected individuals and the surrounding community.

The response effort was a collaborative endeavor, with 23 firefighters from Larne, Carnlough, and Ballyclare working tirelessly to contain the situation and make the scene safe. Their expertise and swift action played a crucial role in mitigating the immediate risks posed by the release of slurry gases, ultimately bringing the incident under control by approximately 7:00 pm.

In the aftermath of the incident, authorities have informed the Health and Safety Executive, signaling a commitment to thorough investigation and accountability in ensuring workplace safety standards are upheld. The involvement of regulatory agencies underscores the seriousness with which such incidents are treated and the imperative of identifying any lapses in safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers faced by those working in the agricultural sector, where exposure to hazardous substances such as slurry gases poses a constant threat to health and safety. As the farming community grapples with the aftermath of this incident, it is essential that efforts are redoubled to prioritize safety training, implement robust safety measures, and provide adequate resources to mitigate the risks associated with agricultural work.

As we extend our thoughts and wishes for the swift recovery of those affected by this incident, let us also recommit ourselves to fostering a culture of safety and vigilance within the agricultural industry—a culture where the well-being of workers is paramount, and preventable accidents such as this one become a thing of the past.
