Dear LTHS Community,
At approximately 10:09am today, the South Campus Main Office received a phone call from an individual threatening violence against the school. Western Springs Police were notified immediately and we implemented a soft lockdown (secure and teach). North Campus was not impacted by the soft lockdown.
The Western Springs Police Department immediately arrived on site and completed a full sweep of South Campus, providing an “all clear” at 10:41am indicating that the school day could resume as scheduled. The soft lockdown has been lifted, however, for the remainder of the day, out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased police presence at South Campus.
Since April 2, LT South Campus has received three “swatting” calls. “Swatting” is defined as the action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring out the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address. The call received today was deemed to be another “swatting” call. The District continues to work closely with the Western Springs Police Department in the investigation of these calls.
The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. While we have been given the all clear, we acknowledge and understand that this type of incident is stressful to everyone and disrupts our sense of security. As always, we have school social workers, psychologists, and counselors available for any student or individual who may need support at both South and North Campus. We are grateful to our community for their support through these concerning ‘pranks’. As shared on our school safety website, we rely on our entire community to “See Something, Say Something” and we encourage everyone to report any situation or behavior that is, or appears to be, physically or psychologically harmful.
Dr. Brian Waterman, Superintendent
Lyons Township High School District 204
