Man arrested after alleged burglary at a Sioux City Select Mart Saturday night

The tranquility of an ordinary Saturday evening in Sioux City was shattered by a disturbing incident at a local gas station, leaving residents shaken and authorities on high alert. According to court documents, the ordeal unfolded at the Select Mart gas station on 14th St., where 36-year-old Craig Mitchell, a Sioux City resident, allegedly perpetrated a brazen act of theft and intimidation.

Reports indicate that Mitchell, armed with a medium-sized folding knife, entered the establishment around 4 p.m. and proceeded to snatch approximately $45 worth of merchandise from the store shelves. When confronted by a clerk and asked to leave, Mitchell purportedly brandished the knife and issued menacing threats, escalating a routine shopping excursion into a harrowing ordeal.

The swift response of law enforcement led to Mitchell's apprehension shortly thereafter. Upon his arrest, authorities discovered the stolen items and the weapon in his possession, corroborating the gravity of the situation. Moreover, a subsequent search revealed the presence of a white crystallized substance, later identified as methamphetamine, along with needles—a troubling testament to the broader societal challenges facing communities nationwide.

In the wake of the incident, Mitchell now faces a litany of charges, including trespassing, possession of a controlled substance, and first-degree burglary, underscoring the severity of his actions and the legal ramifications thereof. As he awaits adjudication, Mitchell finds himself incarcerated at the Woodbury County Jail, his future uncertain as he grapples with the consequences of his alleged transgressions.

This sobering episode serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in safeguarding public safety. It underscores the tireless efforts of law enforcement personnel who stand as sentinels against criminality, working tirelessly to uphold the rule of law and protect the well-being of citizens. As Sioux City residents reckon with the aftermath of this unsettling event, they are reminded of the resilience of their community and the imperative of remaining united in the face of adversity.

The student was interviewed by officers who found the statements made not to be an actual threat to the school or any other students. As soon as it was determined that there was no threat, the school issued a notice that it was no longer on lockdown status. “We want to thank the school officia...
