The victim of yesterday’s shooting has been identified as 71-year-old Vahid Khaledi. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Khaledi during this difficult time.
The aggressor was identified as 33-year-old Humberto Paz. Paz was arrested yesterday by Brownsville Police Patrol Officers at the scene.
Paz was arraigned this morning and issued a $3,250,000 bond for Murder (1st Degree Felony) and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (2nd Degree Felony).
Preliminary information revealed that the incident arose due to a verbal altercation between the victim and the aggressor, both whom were visiting the library. Other claims related to this incident are unconfirmed at this time and remain under investigation.
Despite this unfortunate event, we want to assure our community that safety remains our top priority. We want to recognize the excellent work taken by the library staff and our patrol officers who were able to safely evacuate everyone from the scene in a calm and orderly manner.
The Brownsville Public Library Main Branch will be closed until further notice.
